Car Hire in Cape Verde

Car hire in Cape Verde should be approached with care. If done well, the rewards are tremendous: there is so much to see and do around the islands ! If not done well, you may be wasting a lot of your holiday time (e.g. coming to the car hire place with no staff to be found in the afternoon, not getting the car you need such as a 4x4 to see the more rugged areas, getting a badly maintained car that breaks down).

Some tips:

  • Brand name firms are no better than the locals just more expensive as they are all franchised and none are policed by HQ.
  • You need a 4x4 to get anywhere interesting on any of the islands.
  • Try to get a car with airconditioning (e.g. 4x4 Suzukis Vitaras or Ssangyongs)

Car hire in Cape Verde: Sao Vicente

Sao Vicente has a bus service which runs to and from Mindelo early in the morning and late afternoon carrying commuters. Hiring a car or taking a taxi is often a practical solution. Sao Vicente has good roads and cars can be readily hired in Mindelo.

In Santa Antao the cobbled roads through the mountains are hazardous as they are not repaired. Local drivers know where the worst potholes are. But it may be wiser to use a taxi, particularly at night..

Car hire in Cape Verde: Sal

The island is only 30 miles long and you can get around it all in a day. Travel within Sal is simple by taxi, which should cost no more than £4 by day or £6 at night. Until recently taxis would not cheat customers who do not speak Portuguese but reports suggest that this may be changing. So check the price first in euros.
